Say Farewell to the Carb Craze

carb craze

No carbs. Low carbs. Fad diets were making us “carb” crazy for a while.

Carbohydrates were once the bad guys – the less we ate, the better. But those days are gone as more and more doctors, dieticians and nutritionists are agreeing that meticulously counting carbohydrates isn’t the answer to a healthy diet.

Studies show that if you want to lose weight, it’s not the carbohydrates you need to count, but the calories. So it may be time to say goodbye to all those carb-counting diets and finally feel good about enjoying that delicious plate of pasta in front of you.

After all, carbohydrates are not only our body’s main fuel source, they also enhance our mental health and we all need that!

According to a recent study in the Journal of the American Dietetics Association (ADA), restricting carbohydrates for an extended period of time can lead to an increased risk of vitamin deficiency, osteoporosis and ketosis.

“The only good thing that has come from the low-carb craze is that it has served to educate Americans that there are good and bad carbs,” ADA Spokeswoman Julie Walsh MS, RD was quoted as saying on WebMD. “As a nation, we need to eat more whole grains and fewer refined carbohydrates if we are going to be successful at weight loss.”

So it turns out that good carbs are good for us and are an important source of long lasting energy. So say goodbye to fad diets and stock up on legumes, whole-wheat pastas, brown rice, quinoa, broccoli, apples and other fiber-rich fruits and veggies.

Carbs to stay away from? It’s not rocket science.  The bad guys in the carb world are juices, soda, breakfast cereals, cakes, pies and those greasy potato chips. They are sure to zap your energy and leave you feeling blah.

Think quality, not quantity. That means we can say goodbye to the carb craze diets and say hello to pasta night.

It’s about time we can go crazy over carbs… as long as we choose wisely. ♦
